Cut & Polished Geodes Page #01
A geode is a spherical or oblong rock containing a hollow space, a cavity, that can be filled or partially filled by a variety of minerals. From the Greek word "geoides," meaning "earthlike," these generally orb-shaped rocks can vary in size from a few millimeters to many feet in diameter and can form in volcanic or sedimentary environments. Volcanic geodes are typically silica rich, forming various types of quartz; sedimentary geodes may be carbonate rich or of marine composition and result in a wide variety of shapes and mineral content. Basically, a geode can form in any cavity within a rock. The crystals in geodes grow inward from the rind into the hollow space. When a geode becomes totally filled by the minerals within them so there is no longer a cavity, they are referred to as a nodule. Every geode is unique in composition, from size and formation of crystals to different color shades.
Texas Rock Shop offers geodes and nodules gathered from many locations, and the inventory includes geodes from Mexico, like Choyas, Trancas, Ilianite, Coconut; Brazilian agate geodes and Ocos; Keokuk from Illinois, Dugway from Utah, and Thundereggs from the Pacific Northwest. Browse our pages for both polished geodes and unpolished geodes, cracked open or cut with a rock saw, in singles or pairs.
